## Obtaining

[Ice (Volatiles)](/wiki/ice-volatiles) is a frozen [ore](/wiki/ores) that can be mined throughout the surface and underground of a planet or an asteroid using a [Mining Drill](/wiki/mining-drill) or [Pickaxe](/wiki/pickaxe).

It is recommended to equip the [Mining Belt](/wiki/mining-belt) before mining, as mining ice without the belt will put the ore in the player's hand, where it may start to melt. Ice is extremely sensitive to temperature and will sublimate to gas if the surrounding temperature is at 0 °C or above. This can be avoided, even in hot environments, if the ice is placed in a [Mining Belt](/wiki/mining-belt) or specific devices like the [Ice Crusher](/wiki/ice-crusher) (even when turned off).

## Processing

Volatile Ice can be processed into a [Pipe Network](/wiki/pipe-network) by placing it into an [Ice Crusher](/wiki/ice-crusher).

If necessary, Volatile Ice can also be turned into a gas by being placed on the ground or in the player's hand when the surrounding temperature is at or above 0 °C. This will release the ice's components into the surrounding [atmosphere](/wiki/atmosphere), however, which may not be ideal.

## Usage

The main use of [Volatiles](/wiki/volatiles), or H₂, is to combine them with [Oxygen](/wiki/oxygen) in a 2:1 ratio (2 parts H₂ to 1 part O₂), forming a fuel for use in a [Furnace](/wiki/furnace). While a furnace does have an input pipe for fuel, it can be much simpler in the early-game to put Volatile Ice and [Oxite](/wiki/ice-oxite) into the furnace directly, bypassing the need to set up a pipe network to crush, store, and mix Volatile Ice into a fuel for the furnace. This isn't a perfect mix, as Oxite is not pure oxygen, however this has no noticeable effect on the furnace's performance.
