## Description

> *"Nitrous oxide is a reactive gas that will knock players out if inhaled. It acts as an oxidizer for combustion, and allows [volatiles](/wiki/volatiles) to burn significantly hotter, faster, and at a lower autoignition temperature. It can be produced in an energy intensive process inside of a [Nitrolyzer](/wiki/nitrolyzer)."*
> — Stationpedia

**Nitrous Oxide**, also referred to as **N₂O** or **Nitrous**, is a reactive [gas](/wiki/gas) primarily used for it's role in the creation of [Superfuel](/wiki/fuel#gas-fuel). Nitrous Oxide naturally occurs when smelting [lead](/wiki/ore-lead) and [silver](/wiki/ore-silver). It can also be acquired by [crushing](/wiki/ice-crusher) [Nitrice](/wiki/nitrice)

## Details

Nitrous Oxide will condense into **Liquid Nitrous Oxide** at a very low pressure and temperature. Due to this, Nitrous Oxide is best stored as a liquid above 252 K / -21.15 °C. Stationeers are advised to monitor pipelines when setting up Nitrous Oxide gas systems as ruptures may occur if the temperature remains unchecked.

Nitrous Oxide can be combined with [Volatiles](/wiki/volatiles) at a 1:1 ratio to create [Superfuel](/wiki/fuel#gas-fuel). Superfuel combusts at 323 K / 50.00 °C, burning much hotter and quicker than [Fuel](/wiki/fuel#gas-fuel).

While Nitrous Oxide can be acquired through smelting ores and crushing ice, it can also be created via the [Nitrolyzer](/wiki/nitrolyzer) using a combination of [Nitrogen](/wiki/nitrogen) and [Oxygen](/wiki/oxygen).

## Notes

- For rocketry, Nitrous Oxide has a mass of about 21.74 mol/kg, giving the 1:1 fuel mix an average molar mass of ~32.258 mol/kg compared to 62.5 for a [Fuel](/wiki/fuel#gas-fuel) mix.
- Many Nitrous Oxide storage builds will include a [condensation trap](/wiki/phase-change-guide#heating-2f-cooling-with-phase-change-loops) to avoid pipe ruptures.
- [Alien Mushroom](/wiki/alien-mushroom)s breathe Nitrous Oxide and exhale oxygen and nitrogen.

## Sources

You can collect Nitrous Oxide from the following sources:
| Source | Amount |
|---|---|
| [Nitrice](/wiki/nitrice) | 2.5 mol |
| [Silver](/wiki/silver) | 1 mol |
| [Lead](/wiki/lead) | 0.4 mol |
